Let’s be real…what adults enjoy most about summer carnivals and state fairs is the FOOD! Corndogs, funnel cake, cotton candy, caramel apples, and FRIED OREOS, just to name a few. Going to the Wisconsin State Fair this last week was INCREDIBLE. There were TOO many good foods to try that it would take multiple trips to get through our bucket list of foods. But we did learn something: EVERYTHING can be fried.
And in that “fried” spirit, we recreated a carnival and fair favorite: fried Oreos.
But there is some history behind this recipe. The first time Begad ever made these was when he was in Boy Scouts. He needed to make something to earn his cooking badge, and so fried Oreos it was, because why not?
It sounds complicated, but it’s really not, and I didn’t believe him until he made it for me. <–The story of how this even came to be is actually pretty funny.
We were engaged at the time and I was over his parents’ house. I felt like doing something different that day, you know, something that wasn’t watching a movie or TV. So I joked around and told Begad he was being boring. He didn’t like that. At all. We sat around a little longer irritated with one another and then he told me to grab my bag. We got in the car and rode off.
Minutes later…
“Why are we at Giant?” I asked him, confused.
“Because. You said I was boring. So I came up with something for us to do,” he replied.
“So we are going grocery shopping?”
“No, we are going to make fried Oreos!”
…that shut me up. We walked down to the cookie aisle and chose our Oreos. We got original because you just have to, and we also decided to give Red Velvet a try.
Suddenly, I was in a better mood.
When we got back to his parents’ house we took out the ingredients and started frying.
Ever since, it has become a fun activity we do together and could very well turn into a family tradition down the line.
If you don’t believe us when we say that it’s simple. Here’s the recipe so you can recreate it yourself.
FRIED OREOS
Ingredients
- Pancake Mix (Just Add Water)
- 2 cups Canola Oil
- Oreos
Instructions
-
Make pancake mix in a mixing bowl, according to box instructions. You won’t need too much batter unless you want to make lots of fried Oreos.
-
Add 2 cups of oil to a saucepan and set on medium-high.
-
Wait for it to start boiling (be careful not to place your face too close to the pan, as the oil can pop and burn you). To test the level of heat, sprinkle some water and see if it pops.
-
Dip Oreos one at a time into pancake batter.
-
Gently place batter-covered Oreo into the saucepan of oil and wait 30 seconds for one side of it to fry. Flip it over for another 30 seconds, then remove with a serving spoon and place on a paper towel covered plate.
-
Repeat until you’ve fried as many as your stomach desires, or when the batter is done.
-
Sprinkle powdered sugar on the fried Oreos.
-
Devour!

You can add ice cream, whip cream, whatever you prefer. But we like it how it is with powdered sugar sprinkled on top 🙂
And since Oreo comes out with funky flavors practically all the time now, try a couple new ones and have fun with it.
You can also do this with chocolate chip cookies or edible cookie dough. We tried frying Chips Ahoy one time and it came out pretty good. It wasn’t as delicious as the Oreos, but still, pretty good, same with the cookie dough.
Tip: If you have leftover batter, make a new batch the next day, or use for pancakes in the morning!
